Learn to Swim Program

LEARN TO SWIM PROGRAM

Lessons are $30.00 or $20.00 with a $10.00 Recreation Coupon. Recreation coupon can be picked up from the Recreation Department located at 109 E Ross.

 

Daily lessons are 30 minutes for Tiny Tots and Level 1 and 45 minutes for Levels 2 through 6. All lessons are Monday through Friday for two weeks.

 

All classes must have a minimum of 10 enrolled for the class to be held. If the City has to cancel your class because there are not enough students, you will have a choice to move to another class or receive a refund.

 

Level 1:  Beginners Water exploration   5 years of age

The objective of Level 1 is to help students learn to feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely.

 

Level 2:  Beginners Water Exploration & Primary Skills 6 years of age

The objective of Level 2 is to give students success with fundamental skills.

Students learn to float without support and to recover to a vertical position.

 

Level 3:  Advanced Beginners Stoke Readiness - Must have passed Level 2

The objective of Level 3 is to build on the skills in Level 2 by providing additional guided practice. Students learn to coordinate the front crawl and back crawl, elementary backstroke and the fundamentals of treading water.

 

Level 4:  Intermediate Swimmer Stroke Development - Must have passed Level 3

The objective of level 4 is to develop confidence in the strokes learned thus far and to improve other aquatic skills. Students increase their endurance by swimming familiar strokes (elementary backstroke, front crawl, and back crawl) for greater distances than at Level 3. Students learn the breaststroke and sidestroke and basics of turning at a wall.

 

Level 5:  Refinement - Must have passed Level 4

The objective of Level 5 is coordination and refinement of keystrokes. Students are introduced to the butterfly, open turns, the feet-first surface dive and springboard diving. Students learn to perform the front crawl and back crawl for increased distances and to perform the sidestroke and breaststroke.

 

Level 6:  Advanced Swimmer Skill Proficiency - Must have passed Level 5

The objective of Level 6 is to polish strokes so students swim them with more ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. Students develop considerable endurance by the end of this course. Students are introduced to additional turns as well as the pike and tuck service dives.
